A Book That Changed My Life: How to Win Friends and Influence People

Before I begin I want to remind you that this is a more personalized book review. I’m going to share with you how this book changed my life and how this book might do the same for you.

I read this book about a year after reading think and grow rich. It was sometime about halfway through 2014. I was in the process of starting my own business while still working at a gym doing maintenance work and personal training. I remember one of the members of the gym telling me about this book so I decided to buy it.

By nature I am a very introverted person. I am usually quiet and shy, especially around new people. It took time for me to warm up to someone I didn’t know. I had trouble starting conversations even if I was knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. To put it frankly, I wasn’t the best with my communication skills. Not exactly a skill to be lacking in when you are trying to start a business.

All I can say is that I’m incredibly grateful that I read this book. It changed the whole dynamic of how I talk to others not only in business, but in daily life.

After reading it I began to practice the principles. How to win friends and influence people gave me a new confidence on how to effectively communicate with others. I learned that I didn’t always have to be the one doing the majority of the talking. Taking the time to genuinely listen to others and see things from their point of view. Most of all, it taught me how to influence others and become a leader. There is a reason why after over 80 years since being published it is still selling copies.

Now While I’m still an introvert by nature, my ability to have a positive impact on others through my communication skills has improved dramatically. I feel much more comfortable and confident in talking with others.

The language in the book is simple. That’s the way that the author Dale Carnegie intended it to be. There are several real life examples throughout the book to give a better understanding of each principle and how you may apply it into your daily life.

What can How to Win Friends and Influence People for You

We live in a world where communication is essential in our daily lives. Being able to effectively communicate with other people has more value than any form of education. If you can influence others, you can almost guarantee the outcome of your success. To learn effective communication skills can have a tremendous impact on your life.

For being shy and introverted like myself, it may help you in your ability to communicate with others on a more effective basis. This doesn’t mean that you have to talk more, it just means that you will be able to deliver your message to have a more favorable impression with the person you are speaking with.

If you want to win people over to your way of thinking subtly and genuinely. This is about building positive relations with others. Taking the time to show interest in others so that you can become interesting to others. I know that sounds weird but it works. Taking time to listen to others makes you a better conversationalist and become well liked by other people.

This one to me is the most valuable thing you can learn from how to win friends and influence people. The lesson is trying to see things from the other person’s point of view. If you can learn that, you can have a major influence on anyone you talk to. That is one of the most essential traits to have if you want to be successful in any endeavor in life.

Individuality

You want to stand out from the crowd

A lone soul in the middle of the sea

You wish your voice to be heard

A howling wind on a cold winter’s night

You wait to be alone

As the sunset kisses its last goodbye of light

Individuality is a one way road

An isolated walk from paths you know

It is you and you alone

To take the road to see where you will go

Though you may be mocked by the masses

Don’t let your dreams be turned to ashes

Because to rise above the crowd

You must read your dreams aloud

Do not be lonely along this journey

For you alone are your best companion

To make the masses stop and listen

You must first assure that your own voice glistens

Finding Your Purpose #4: The Secret of Living

So I’m guessing you’re wondering what the secret to living is? The answer is incredibly simple. It is an answer that when practiced gives life a whole new meaning. The secret to living is giving! I’m sure that you’ve heard this phrase before. It’s nothing new. Nothing groundbreaking. But so few actually practice this “secret” on a daily basis.

So often we get caught up in our own needs and wants. This leads to immediate gratification but leaves a void. That void can only be filled with a deep sense of fulfillment in our hearts. That fulfillment comes when we give back to others.

Now I’m not saying that you need to be completely selfless. Self-care is important too. It’s about having a balance between the two.

What does giving have to do with finding your purpose? Again it’s simple. We give because it gives us an indescribable feeling in our heart. Giving back is what humanity is all about. It has transformed our species over the course of history. Giving back is encoded into our DNA. Whether it is active or lying dormant.

Before we go any further with how giving can aid in finding your purpose, there is something that needs to be stated. Giving to someone with the expectation of something in return is not giving. It’s selfishness to the highest extent. To truly give is to expect nothing in return for your kind deeds.

Giving back isn’t always in terms of money. Sure charitable donations can help those in need. It’s honorable to donate spare money if you have it. But there are so many other ways that you can give back and make a positive contribution to society. Some examples include:

  • Volunteer your time: Take an hour of your day and work at a food bank, spend some time at a senior citizen home or work with children
  • Donate food items: If you have some spare food that is still good, drop it off at a local food bank or give to someone who is homeless
  • Be a listening ear: Everyone has problems, sometimes all we need is for someone to listen to make us feel better
  • Speak kind words to others: Even if it’s a stranger, give them a genuine compliment. A kind word can turn a bad day around
  • Smile: If you see someone having a bad day give them a smile. A genuine smile. You never know how much that could mean to someone

All of these things can have an immeasurable impact on someone else’s life. Never underestimate the small actions. Because for someone else it may be sunshine on the dreariest of days. Take a moment and think of one way you can give back. Do some research if necessary to get some ideas.

Giving back is a major factor in purpose. No matter big or small in scale. When you give back you receive the greatest of all gifts. Love that radiates through your heart. That love you feel could provide the inspiration needed in the journey of finding your purpose.

Journey of the Author #3: The Madness of Writing

It’s amazing how quickly a week flies by. Last week I shared with you that I was in the beginning stages of writing the first rough draft for my book. I also discussed that blogging has become a priority for me. Which it still is. So let me give you an update for where I currently stand with the book.

So I’ve made some progress with Rock Bottom: Rise From the Ashes. Rejuvenate your life. For the past week I have been making time every night to dedicate to writing the rough draft. I even set a daily goal for myself. 500 words a night minimum. Now I know that it isn’t an outrageous number of words to write in a day but I feel if I set a word goal. The book will continue to be written.

Have I stuck to that 500 words per day over the last week? Sadly no. There have been some night where I’ve only gotten 200-300 words written. Other nights I’ve gone over the 500 word goal to make up for lost ground. As of right now I’m at about 3,200 words.

I’m working on the book from start to finish. Part one is something that I had no old notes for so I’ve been starting from the ground up. I have to say it’s been an adventure to say the least. There are times where I’ll stare at the computer screen for 20 minutes before I even put a sentence down. Writer’s block has definitely gotten the best of me a couple days. But I keep moving forward with it no matter what.

As far as progress goes, I’ve written the first chapter of the book titled: Perspective of a Cruel World. I know it isn’t a pretty title for a chapter but my book is about rock bottom. Something that isn’t a pretty sight. I’ve also written about half of the next chapter titled: Influences and How They Shape You.

While I hoped to get you an excerpt from the book this week I feel that there is nothing worthy to share with you. I want to give you something great. With this being the first rough draft, my ideas are like dumping marbles all over the floor. They’re all over the place.

Next week I want to share an excerpt with you of the book. I’m going to make it a promise and do my absolute best to deliver it to you. Even if it’s just a paragraph of the book. So instead I’ll share with you what the first chapter of the book entails.

Perspective of a cruel world is about how you view the world when you are at rock bottom. It discusses the various reasons why one may hit rock bottom or is on the slide down the slippery slope. How you perceive the world and how you can change that perception to take the first step in turning your life around. To view the world with a new set of eyes and to change your thoughts in times when negativity reigns supreme.

The chapter is about having a better understanding of why you’re at this low point. It is the first step to coming to terms with where you are at and starting to make the changes necessary to make your life better.

I’ve learned from starting the actual writing of the book is that writing is a madness. I’ve gotten a taste of it from writing blog posts on an everyday basis but writing a book is a whole other animal. A challenge that I’ll gladly take on. With my daily writing goal in place I’ll be able to continuously make progress. No matter how small it is.

While writing can be frustrating at times. Especially when the words just don’t seem to flow, I’m happy that I’ve made it a habit to get back to writing after all of these years away. Writing gives me a certain peace within that I can’t experience elsewhere on a consistent basis. As weird as that sounds. Whether it is writing the book or writing a blog post for you, my amazing readers I am always happy when I write.

Thank you for stopping by to see my progress!

Finding Time to Write

Life can be busy. Between work, family, running errands, exercising, commuting and relaxation the day just seems to fly by. It’s hard to find any time to get in writing. Maybe you’ve been hoping to work on that book you’ve always wanted to publish. Or maybe you want to write more blog posts. But you never seem to have the time to get those things done.

Writing quality content takes time and finding time to write may seem impossible right now with your hectic schedule. The key is, if you truly want to right you have to schedule it onto your daily routine. Even if it’s just 10 minutes a day that can go a long way in achieving your writing goals.

Take a few moments and look at your day. See if there is a small gap in which you can dedicate some writing time. It could be a lunch break, after the kids go to bed or first thing when you wake up in the morning. Trust me if you truly want to do it you’ll find the time. It could even be a day of the week where you have more free time. The key is to structure writing time into your routine. It’s about making it a habit. Now I know this is easier said than done, especially in the beginning.

It doesn’t matter how long you write or how many words are written in that span. It could be brainstorming a new character, coming up with topics for future posts or even writing a single paragraph. All these things are wins in my eyes. The reason is that you are making progress. Even if it is in small increments, you are still getting closer to the end result.

Progress keeps you moving in the right direction. It keeps you motivated to achieve more. Since you can actually see your progress with the words written, your results are more tangible.

Eventually you’ll want to write for longer and will find a way to make the time into your busy schedule. Over time your book will be written. You’ll be churning out blog posts on a more consistent basis. Whatever your goal, your efficiency will skyrocket.

For me my time to write is at night when things are quiet and I can focus solely on writing. Whether it be writing my book or creating blog posts for my amazing readers. I’ve made it a habit to write something every single day. Even if it is just one blog post or a couple paragraphs for the book. That progress keeps me motivated to continue writing.

When is your writing time? What makes it ideal for you? Do you set a time limit on your writing?

Rock Bottom #3: The Climb Out

So last time we talked you were preparing to make a comeback for the ages. How have you been fairing in that endeavor?

Now that you’ve made the decision to comeback from rock bottom into a better life for yourself, it’s time to start the climb. Hold on tight because this is going to be a treacherous climb.

How long have you been at rock bottom? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? The reason I ask is because the longer you’ve been down there, the longer climbing out is going to take. Don’t be discouraged about your answer. Remember that you are making a comeback for the ages. Believe that it’s possible for you.

Sometimes when you’ve been at rock bottom for an extended period of time, you have an uneasy familiarity with it. A distorted comfort of sorts. You want to get out but don’t want to put in the effort necessary. You don’t want to feel uncomfortable and go through the growth needed to get out. I’m going to tell you something. You need to get comfortable being uncomfortable if you are going to climb out of rock bottom.

When you demand more out of your life, life is going to demand more out of you. It is the balance that holds the universe in order. You’re going to have to dig deep within. There you will find strength unknown to you and potential waiting to be unleashed. So let’s begin the climb.

I will share something with you. During this climb you will experience all types of terrain. Some of it will be smooth, some will be at a gentle incline. This is just life playing a game with you. It’s a preparation of what’s to come.

Then there will be times of difficult traversing. Obstacles thrown your way. Adversities you never saw coming. Defeats that will try to make you lose your grip. This is the test of life. You must hold your ground and continue the climb up.

This is where you must harness your will. Dig deep and not allow anything to get you down. It is about persistence and determination that you deserve to have a better life. Because you do. During these tough times when you are tested remember this. It will pass. Things won’t always be this bad.

So you’ve begun the climb out of rock bottom. What an incredible feat it is! Keep going and don’t stop no matter what. Your life is valuable and you deserve to have more, do more and be more.

Question of the Week #3

What would you do if you had $100 million dollars?

I know what you’re thinking. Wow! That’s a lot of money! That’s the point of this question. If you had all the money you ever needed in your life. Money doesn’t solve all problems but it does turn the wheels of industry.

This question is more geared towards how you would spend your money if you were wealthy beyond your wildest dreams. Since money isn’t an issue with this question. Go wild with your answers. Let your imagination be free.

Here are a few more questions to get the creative juices flowing:

  • What would be the first thing you buy?
  • How much would you donate to charity or those less fortunate?
  • Would you help your family and friends out financially?
  • What places would you travel to?
  • How much money would you save or invest? (if any)
  • What would you do just for you?
  • Would you still work at your current job? Would you work at all?

Again, take your time with these answers. Really think about each question and if you want write it down.

This question allows you to see some insights on what you would do if you were living your best financial life. Now I’m not saying that you have to be a multi-millionaire to be happy. Money doesn’t buy happiness. It’s the truth. It’s just a glance into some of the things you would truly want in your life. Maybe this gives you a spark to start that new business you’ve always wanted. Or maybe make a career change to become more financially independent.

If you would oblige I would love to hear your answers to these questions.

Fireside Chats #3: Positivity

Fireside Chats

Welcome!

I’m happy to have you for this fireside chat. As the week comes to a close I have something I wish to share with you. This week’s topic is about positivity and the rewards you may reap for practicing it.

Take a seat and let’s begin my dear friend.

A twinkle in the eye and the shine of a smile. Positivity brightens the world around. A kind word or a gentle act, something that positivity doesn’t lack. It brings happiness to the sad, hope to despair and love to those heartbroken.

It is a state of mind, always finding the light regardless how dark the situation may seem. A positive attitude brings riches to those who practice it. Not only in terms of money but in the invaluables that constitutes peace of mind. A decision of positivity over it’s negative counterpart, rising to a higher state of being.

How may you implement this incredible gift? The answer is not so easy but I know that you have the strength within to win the fight. What fight am I speaking of? It is the fight within your mind. The toughest battle you will ever face but once won will give you more rewards than you could ever imagine.

As with everything you do it all starts with a thought. One lone thought that must be nourished as a seed planted in the earth.

“I will be positive” is the phrase. Hold this thought in your mind for a few moments. Believe with all of your heart that it is possible for you to be positive. Regardless of how negative your thoughts and actions might have been in your past. Let this phrase be a new chapter in your life.

With that sole thought, more positive thoughts will attract to your mind to compliment it. Only focus on the positive. Don’t allow yourself to stoop down to negativity. It doesn’t serve you. Don’t fret if you don’t succeed in keeping out the negativity. Try again and again until you succeed. This is a fight you must win.

Now I will share with you 3 principles that will aid you in your journey of positivity. These are lessons to engrave into your mind if you are to have a positive attitude in all areas of your life.

  1. There is always light somewhere. No matter how dim it may be. No matter how grim the situation may seem. Search for the light and only the light. Do not stay in the darkness. This is finding the positive in everything
  2. Your mind is your greatest ally. Feed it only the purest of inspirations. Focused on happiness, prosperity, peace and love. Do not be tempted by the harsh winds of criticism, hatred and chaos. For it will blow you away into misery.
  3. Your actions are a reflection of your subconscious. Become self-aware of your actions. Shift them to positivity. Make the effort of helping your fellow man or woman.

Start this very moment and do not wait. Do not become ignorant to your thoughts and actions. For they will control you no matter what. The decision you have in the matter is whether it is positive or negative in nature. The decision carries with it the manifestations of your journey in life.

Let your choice be positivity. Your world will never be the same. The beauties of the world will take your breath away. I can promise you that.

I hope that you enjoyed our chat. May today be the best day of your life and the coming days will be better than that. Until we meet again next week I hope that your coming week is filled with joy and prosperity. Thank you for stopping by my dear friend.

A Book That Changed My Life: Think and Grow Rich

Before I start I want to state something. This isn’t going to be a traditional book review. What I want to share is a more personalized experience of how this book changed my life. Also what I believe that this book may do for you. That is what the self-help genre of literature is all about. So let’s begin how it changed my life.

I read this book around Christmas 2012. At the time I was working at a gym doing maintenance work as well as being a personal trainer. It was a job that I started immediately after high school because of an internship I got my senior year. I was a young man at the time. Around 20 years old. My job wasn’t giving me the satisfaction that I truly desired for my life.

After looking on amazon for self-help books I ran across this classic. I had never heard of think and grow rich. I purchased it and started reading it every night. I finished it before new years 2013. Think and grow rich stuck a chord in my very soul. By the end of reading the book I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I was going to start my own company.

I treated this book as a manifesto of sorts, continuously reading parts of it every single night. It put my mindset into a money consciousness. Even though at the time I wasn’t making a lot of money, I felt like a millionaire in my mind.

In think and grow rich it describes that an individual must have a definite purpose for their life. I choose mine. I wanted to open up my own gym. It wasn’t going to be just any gym. I would’ve described it as a fitness mall. Your one stop shop for all things health related. At the time I had no business experience but to me that didn’t matter. I believed that I could achieve it. There was a fire inside me that was forcing me to pursue this dream.

The next thing the book describes it to have a specific dollar amount. I only had a few hundred dollars in the bank at that time. I set a lofty goal that if I reached it would blow my mind. $10 million. I gave myself 2 years to achieve this. I wrote down my definite purpose, the amount of money and what I intended to give in return. I read it day and night. Believing that it could truly be mine.

The essence of think and grow rich is that you only have one limitation in life. That limitation is the one you set up in your mind. It is about mental conditioning that you can acquire anything that your life desires.

Now I’m going to fast forward 2 years because if I don’t this post would end up being a book. I had some major adversities along the way but they didn’t stop me. Just a few days short of the 2 year mark I was just some paperwork away from having the $10 million necessary to start my business.

This story doesn’t have a happy ending. In short I got greedy and felt like I needed more money. The investors fell through and I had no money to show for it. It was life’s way of telling me that I wasn’t ready. It was no one else’s fault but my own. Something that I take full responsibility for. Because I know from the principles in think and grow rich that your mind can either make or break you.

I didn’t include the 20 hour days that I put into building a business. The relentless pursuit of knowledge to learn about business and everything else that was necessary to learn. But this story does have a valuable lessons it taught me.

  1. That if you have an idea and believe in it so deeply that you’re willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it, you can move mountains to make it a reality.
  2. The mind is your most powerful resource you have. It can be your greatest ally or your worst enemy. The beautiful thing about that is it’s your choice to make.

These 2 lessons learned have more value to me than all of the gold and silver in the world.

Let’s discuss what this book can do for you any my recommendations for reading it.

What can Think and Grow Rich do for you?

First and foremost it can teach you the true power that your mind has over your reality in life. “Whatever the mind can conceive, and believe, the mind can achieve.” This is a true statement. The book can help you condition your mind to a money consciousness in the acquisition of riches for your life. But the book doesn’t stop there. It gives you the principles of success in any endeavor you choose. Napoleon Hill the author dedicated over 25 years to the study of success. Interviewing the most successful people of the time.

It can help you get to know yourself on a deeper level. It has a self-analysis questionnaire at the end of the book. By taking this questionnaire you can better understand your strengths and weaknesses. Aiding you in your path to success.

It may give you a spark of inspiration for finding your definite purpose in life. Something that everyone seeks for their life.

When reading the book I would highly recommend to have a pen or pencil with you. Highlighting or underscoring parts that have a favorable impression on you.

Take some time to think and reflect on what you have just read. Reread a chapter if it had a positive effect on you. Also reread the book from time to time. I’ve read this book 10 times already and am still finding something new.

Practice the principles in the book. Find ways to implement them into your daily life. It is about building habits that have a positive impact on your life.

I hope that you enjoyed reading this post. I wanted to give you a more personalized book review for think and grow rich. I believe that this is a book that should be read by everyone. It has a certain energy within the pages.
